What Is Refrigerated (Reefer) Shipping & Why It Matters for Cold-Chain Logistics? Temperature-controlled shipping is essential for protecting sensitive freight
At KNL Logistics, we make it easy to understand exactly what you need to become an approved KNL carrier, with all safety, insurance, documentation, and compliance standards laid out in clear, plain language. We don’t believe in hidden requirements, surprise disqualifiers, or wasting your time during onboarding — if you’re a safe, reliable, and professional carrier committed to taking care of customers, we want you in our network. This overview explains the typical carrier requirements for hauling freight with KNL so you can prepare your paperwork, confirm eligibility, and determine if we’re the right fit for your business.
We require active operating authority with a valid MC/DOT number, no out-of-service status, a satisfactory safety profile with SMS/CSA scores appropriate for your company size, a proven history of safe, compliant operations with no serious unresolved safety issues, and full legal and FMCSA compliance—including proper CDLs and endorsements for all drivers.
Your insurance requirements—typically including Auto Liability with standard minimum coverage, Cargo Insurance suitable for your freight, and Worker’s Compensation as required—must be supported by certificates of insurance with correct limits and KNL listed as a certificate holder (and additional insured or loss payee when applicable), with prompt updates provided whenever anything changes to avoid surprises on active loads.
We partner only with carriers who take service seriously, expecting on-time performance, proactive communication about delays or issues, accurate updates on location and ETA, and professional conduct at all facilities, and in return we provide clear communication, strong shipper support, and a broker who treats you like a true partner—not just a truck on a screen.
We don’t expect you to be a tech company, but we do require basic visibility—meaning you can accept load details by email or portal and provide tracking through check calls, texts, or approved apps when required—so shippers get the visibility they need without burdening carriers with unnecessary technology.
To get you fully set up, we typically require a current W-9, your MC/DOT documentation, certificates of insurance (Liability, Cargo, and Workers Comp when applicable), complete company contact information for dispatch, after-hours, safety, and billing, plus banking or payment details for ACH or approved methods—having these ready helps speed up onboarding so you can start booking freight faster.
We partner with a wide range of carrier types and equipment, so during onboarding we verify what you operate—whether dry van, reefer, flatbed, specialized, or hotshot—confirm that your equipment is roadworthy and meets shipper standards, discuss your preferred regions and lanes, note any drop-trailer capabilities or specialized services such as hazmat or oversized freight, and gather the details we need to match you with the right loads.
